When my husband and I began looking for a home in 2019, we were scared. We didn’t know whether we were ready—or even how to know when someone is ready.
We met realtors who seemed more interested in closing quickly than understanding us. Others barely entertained the conversation because we weren’t pre-qualified yet.
But we were serious buyers. We were simply new, young, and unfamiliar with the process.
“Why are we renting a one-bedroom apartment when we could be paying toward a home with two bedrooms?”
My husband called me crazy.
Two and a half months later, we closed on our first home.
That is why I believe your “today” does not need to begin with a perfect financial plan, a dream-house checklist, or certainty about the entire process. It can begin with one honest desire.
But that desire must evolve.
Before searching for homes, decide what matters to you. If you are buying with a spouse or partner, make the decisions together. A home should never reflect only one person’s priorities when more than one person will build a life inside it.
We repeatedly heard one mantra: location, location, location.
Location matters—but it is not the only thing that matters, and it is not the right answer for every buyer. You don’t live inside a pin on a map. You live inside the home.
Some people want more than an address that may appreciate. They want a place they enjoy living in—a home that holds family dinners, ordinary evenings, celebrations, difficult days, and memories. They don’t want their only escape to be a vacation; they want to look forward to coming home from one.
Your starting point
Before looking at listings, ask:
- What is creating the desire to buy now?
- What would a home give me that my current living situation cannot?
- If I am buying with someone, what matters most to each of us?
- Which features will meaningfully shape our daily life?
- Am I choosing only for resale—or also for the life I want to live here?
Your “today” is not your final destination.
It is the first honest decision in a much longer journey.
